“Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman, a staunch supporter of Israel, said that he disagreed with Biden’s plan to withhold some weapons shipments to Israel, warning the move “demonstrates to Hamas that they’re winning the PR war.” “ CNN quote
(NOTE: Most of the response to the original post below has focused on my statement that I won’t vote for Fetterman. While that is a personal response, based on the sense of disgust I felt when reading the comment on CNN, my real aim wasn’t to prevent some future hypothetical vote against him. Rather, I think the more important point is that those considering themselves progressives, or simply those fellow citizens of the world, who are concerned with the welfare of all humans, find Fetterman’s rejection of Biden’s threat to suspend arms shipments appalling, basically saying “enough is enough", particularly considering that Biden has been on the politically right side of the party and very supportive of Israel. To denounce Biden’s attempt to put an end to this humanitarian horrorshow shows an utter insensitivity to human suffering. In retrospect, I would rather I had written it differently, but I had a strong emotional reaction to his comment. I did change the headline from saying Fetterman is dead to me to saying that his position should be denounced (by people with open minds and open hearts).)
After saying this Fetterman is dead to me; wouldn’t vote for him again, if he’s up for re-election I’ll just not vote for a Senator (hopefully he’ll have a real democrat as a primary challenger). To me this is crossing a moral red line. The whole world except the U.S. has recognized that Israeli’s brutal overreaction to Hamas condemnable attack essentially constitutes a war crime. Numerous aid agencies have said that the suffering inflicted upon the civilian population is unprecedented. The US has been standing alone on this, against the preponderance of the civilized world, taking a huge hit to whatever moral high ground it still possesses. Now, Biden finally stands up to Netanyahu, where apparently, he has been working behind the scenes to get Israel to act in a humanly acceptable manner and Fetterman is too deaf, dumb and blind to stand behind him, taking a position that is certainly opposed by a strong majority of those who voted for him. Just utterly unacceptable. Fetterman a HUGE disappointment.
